twitter can be used professionally because you have the ability to meet new people, saying that so can facebook and myspace. if you want to really network with professionals i would suggest signing up to a business networking site such as http://www.universalclients.com.
Twitter isnt really aimed to the professional market but can still be used for it, would just be more hassle.
